Coffee and Cigarettes
A comic series of short vignettes built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the '20s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide--all the while sitting around sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes. As director Jim Jarmusch delves into the normal pace of our world from an extraordinary angle, he shows just how absorbing the obsessions, joys and addictions of life can be, if truly observed.

It's just famous people talking over coffee. Actually, I don't know if they were all famous because I didn't recognize them all. I'm pretty sure none of it was scripted and none of it was really important conversation. You might have a more interesting time if you went to a real cafe and listened to real conversations. Not for everyone - LePants
If you watch this film expecting the usual narrative structure, you will likely be disappointed. This is more of an art piece, showcasing quirky celebrities placed in basically identical settings with identical devices. Jarmusch's sparse style is at its sparsest here, and as long as you don't expect too much from it, you might be able to enjoy it. It is true that if you don't know the celebs, their conversations probably wouldn't even be worth listening to. This sequence of character studies is sometimes satisfying, particularly the Molina-Coogan and Waits-Pop segments, but it is a little hard not to feel that Jarmusch is resting on his respected filmmaker status and actually didn't make much of an effort to deliver something more substantial. If he intended it to be a study of the inanity of conversation, he did succeed. You don't need a story - jjlook
Just some beautiful shared motifs, charming repetition and really entertaining personalities. That's the thesis Jarmusch proves again and again.
No Tom Waits or Iggy Pop fan should miss the "Somewhere in California" sequence, where Tom turns out to be a really really bad date.
