SLOW BUT BRILLIANT - Len11670
Some novels are not meant to be turned into films because they may become something totally different and can take a life of its own. Onegin is one clear example of a classic from Russian literature that perhaps we would enjoy reading but not watching it as a film. The acting on the other hand was brilliant, especially Liv Tyler who really impressed me with her talent.Well acted, almost beautiful, very slow - Bobbie
In her feature film directorial debut, Martha Fiennes paints a painfully pondering view of bored aristocracy in decline. Everything in this film is in slow-motion... Pushkin's almost autobiographical plot, the performances, the pace ...all leading up to an end that - although true to the poem - does not help the balance of the film or parallel Pushkin's life. Excellent performances by all - the camera loves Liv Tyler. Ralph Fiennes leads a group of producers that, despite their attention to detail, fall short of the standard for period pieces set by Merchant/Ivory. How this film got an R rating is as perplexing as the decision regarding the end.Splendid and inspired - Terry2
It is an adaptation of the 19th century romantic poem by Alexander Pushkin about the tragic love affair between Evgeny Onegin (Ralph Fiennes) and Tatyana Larina (Liv Tyler).
Pushkin's Onegin was a passionate man and his aloofness was a deliberate pretence. He was a model for generations of Russian "malcontents": in a rigidly conservative society playing the "tired of life" was a social stand…Fiennes had understood the meaning of being "tired of life". His performance highlights the movie.
This is a well-acted, well-written and well-directed film.
