But I'm a Cheerleader
"A very funny movie!" - Roger Ebert, Roger Ebert & the Movies
This candy-box colored comedy of sexual discovery chronicles the life of Megan (Natasha Lyonne) a typical teenager coming of age in anything but a typical fashion. Megan's super normal suburban existence is filled with friends, pom-poms and rah-rah enthusiasm until her straight-laced parents (Mink Stole and Bud Cort) suspect that their "little poodle" may, in fact be showing deviant tendencies. In a complete panic, Megan's parents elicit the help of her friends and the guidance of a rehabilitation camp to mount an all-out intervention. Mike (an out-of-drag RuPaul Charles), a True Directions counselor, leads the intervention and before Megan can pack her pom-poms she is whisked off to learn how to be a perfect woman.
True Directions is run under the strict, all-seeing eyes of the sadistic Mary (Cathy Moriarty). Megan dutifully gets with the deprogramming so she can quickly return to her life of boyfriends, football games, and her absolute favorite activity - cheerleading. Everything seems perfect, but the fun begins when her hormones start to rage, and her friends and family wonder where she'll find love!

But I'm a Cheerleader has been my favourite movie for a decade now. It's a histerical satire on stereotypical American family values, religious groups who promise reprogramming and even gay stereotypes. If you don't laugh while watching this movie you take yoursel far to seriously.
Sidebar - The music, written and perfromed by Go Sailor is so poppy you can help but fall in love with them.Oddball comedy - jungforu
It was an interesting movie, but shocking at the same time. It was odd to see her try so hard to not be gay, but then, as the movie progressed, decide it's ok. It was pretty hilarious at times too. It did look very campy at times and low budget, but if you want an oddball comedy, this is a good one.A funny but sad movie - swissguy
I found this movie funny but sad at the same time. It is a caricature in that it exaggerates everything from the girls being outfitted all in pink to the boys being outfitted all in blue. What I found sad about it was that the ex gay camp for teens that this movie depicts actually has real life counterparts. There are real teens being forced to go by their parents. This movie is about a teen girl who is sent to this "straightening" out camp to learn how to be a proper heterosexual girl with all the trappings including cooking, cleaning and serving your man. I found the movie made fun of everything with it's over the top caricaturization but at the same time it portrayed a very disturbing slice of real life and real suffering that made me feel uncomfortable throughout up until close to the end. I hope this was intentional on the part of the director/producer as this is why I gave it 4 stars. I feel that the ability to give the message about how sick and cruel these ex gay camps for teens are at the same time as spoofing the whole thing is like a spoon full of sugar helping the medicine go down. The uncomfortable truth being delivered behind the funny (sugar) coating. What is important is that the message gets out and does make people feel uncomfortable, perhaps even angry, angry enough to do something about it. If so the movie will have done what I hope the makers of it had hoped to accomplish. I recommend zipping it.
