I loved this. I loved the pace, the quiet humour, the scenery, the story, the complexity disguised as simplicity. I loved it that most of the actors were Canadian. I loved that it was produced and directed by Native North Americans. I love it that it's a great, warm story about truth and life, and that it meshes humour with pathos, an essential part of life on the rez. (or off it, for that matter) Kudos!Smoke Signals - movie_goer
"Finally a Movie that dares to be Different!"
Smoke Signals Is the first Movie that was Written, Directed and Produced By Native Americans. Larry Estes(Executive Producer) Proudly Casted a crew of Fresh Faced People, The movie became a wake-up call for Hollywood who for decades Dominated cinema. At a when Natives Americans were played by Asians or were lucky to recieve small parts (And Only that). Finally had there chane to shine. When Dances with the Wolves was released it did 2 things Brought popularity to Native Culture and also over shadowed a Plenty of sterotypes.
It only takes 1 movie to remove that, Smoke Signals shined a modern light of Hope, courage and Understanding. And Yes! successfully removed all unwanted Sterotypes.A Well-told Story - Wooby
Smoke Signals is a wonderful example of what the independent genre can do. It is a unique story told in a unique way.
Absent are the cliche and tired politics found in so many other films depicting Native Americans. This is a human story resonating with any audience, regardless of creed, colour, ethnicity or religion.
Yet still, the film honours the indigenous peoples' tradition of oral storytelling and learning. It weaves together emotion and ideas, present day events and memories, symbolism and straight forward narrative.
The characters are constructed masterfully, and reveal unexpected depth and complexity as the plot progresses. There are no one-dimensional characters there just to facilitate movement of the story. Everyone means something more than they say, and represents something bigger than themselves. Trying to figure it all out stirs your imagination long after the movie has ended. This film does not underestimate or insult its audience with overly simplified and prosaically obvious characters, dialogue or plot points.
And like its characters the story is more than meets the eye at first glance. On the surface it is a compelling coming-of-age tale about two young men learning how to negotiate the world beyond the home they know. But deeper than that it is a story of facing who you were to know who you are--discovering where you should go by reexamining where you have been, and where you are.
It is an emotionally charged walk through the confusing and sometimes very dark realm of our relationships with our parents. It is the journey between two worlds at odds. It is the struggle for identity in the face of widespread antagonism against the individual, and nebulous definitions of self. It is about choices, and living with the onces we make.
Overall it is a story about trying to understand what the signals all around us mean, where they come from and how we should react to the messages they convey.
