The Sum of Us
"Warm and deeply affecting!" -Los Angeles Times
Jack Thompson (Star Wars Episode II) and Oscar winner Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind) star in this "fresh spin [on an] old heart-tugging plot" (Los Angeles Times)-the over protective parent's well-intended interference with an adult child's life. "Extraordinarily funny [and] startlingly effective" (The San Francisco Examiner), this award-winning film is mandatory viewing for anyone who's ever been a parent...or had one!
Harry Mitchell (Thompson) has a problem with his gay son Jeff (Crowe): Harry thinks he needs to find a mate! With a loving push out of the nest-and into the gay bars of Sydney-he becomes his son's biggest cheerleader. But it's Harry's secret romance with an attractive but judgmental divorcee that puts father and son at odds...and prompts them to discover that acceptance is a two-way street!

A Good Film bit dated but still fun to watch - shortie
The movie is an interesting portrayal of a father and a gay son. The concept of the characters talking to the camera for internal dialog took a few minutes to get used to but was an interesting twist. The backdrop of Sydney was amazing and brought back memories of a visit to the country. A nice light hearted movie where the boy does get the boy in the end.Dated - Auguste
This film was dated when it was made but still exhibits enough virtue to make it worth while. Feels more like a film made in 1984 rather than 1994 but has its charms. Russell Crowe could show better taste in his choice of a partner but I guess "that's life". This film is thoughtful and elevated and well acted.Fantastic - leeloo
I rented this for two reasons: 1. crowe's in it and 2. my hairdresser suggested the flick for the one scene that Crowe's in his running shorts. We had this movie at home for 2 weeks before my husband finally relented to watching it. We both loved the movie. The comedic acting of the father's outstanding, Crowe did a very fine performance as well. It made us laugh and cry.
