The Chronicles of Riddick
Unrated Director's Cut
Vin Diesel reprises his star-making "Pitch Black" role of enigmatic anti- hero Richard B. Riddick in the new science fiction action-adventure epic, "The Chronicles of Riddick". Riddick has spent the last five years on the move among the forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding mercenaries bent on collecting the price on his head. Now, the fugitive finds himself on planet Helion, home to a progressive multicultural society, which has been invaded by the Lord Marshal (Feore), a zealot who targets humans for subjugation with his army of warriors known as Necromongers. Exiled to a subterranean prison where extremes of temperature range from arctic nights to volcanic days, Riddick encounters Kyra (Davalos), the lone survivor from an earlier chapter in his life. His efforts to free himself and Kyra lead him to the Necromonger command ship, where he is pitted against the Lord Marshal in an apocalyptic battle with possibly the fate of all beings-both living and dead-hanging in the balance.

The delivery in the second Riddick installment does nothing to disappoint. The effects and scenes were absolutely stunning leaving you with an immersive and action packed experience. I was amazed by the proportion of the follow up. Pitch Black was such an excellent movie it seemed likely to me that any type of follow up would fall short of the original but this is an awesome must watch flick for the sci-fi / action lover.Alright, you got me. - Tralfamadorius
Every scene of the second Riddick installment is absolutely slathered in rich architecture and beautiful landscapes. Even the characters are gorgeous (particularly Thandie Newton as Dame Vaako). I could go on, but really, you have to see it for the full experience.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not calling it cinematic poetry, by any extent of the imagination. But it is something to behold. Unfortunately, the beauty is only skin deep.
The plot is simple, but it takes too long to develop with an overabundance of exposition. The action scenes are unimaginative and aside from a few exceptions, most character interactions seem like walk-thru takes.
Sometimes you watch a movie that is so visually engaging, that you're "tricked" into enjoying the film. The Chronicles of Riddick is one of them. I, too, am tricked to the point of giving it 4 stars.
The special edition blu-ray disc has some nice featurettes, showing off those beautiful sets and cgi backdrops.Unrated? What? How? - Wentai
This movie seems the exact same as what I saw in the theater. Now if they had filmed a movie with tons of gratitous nudity and violence, which did not appear in the theatrical version but does appear on the dvd -- that would be an Unrated Cut. Not this -- it seems identical to what I remember when I first saw this.
Still its a good movie. Not much SF out there, and if you like SF don't miss this one. I used to think it was all action but now I see it differently -- this guy is a prisoner, but he escapes and makes his way up through the enemy ranks to face the man trying to kill him.
Some of the plot elements are staight from the old testament. The bad guy hears a prophecy that someone from Helion will one day kill him, so the bad guys slaughters everyone from Helion, including...well...you know where I'm going if you read the biblical version of King Herod's madness.
Anyway Vin Deisel is great and the action is non-stop. A lot of people blased this movie, review-wise, when it came out but now its getting decent reviews at zip. Weird...
Well worth seeing for the SF special effects, the cool ships, the neat steel 4-man fighter jets, and the fight scenes.
The plot is ok too, about as advanced as Tokyo Drift, which I saw a few days earlier, and which made me want to zip this movie.
