A High Wind In Jamaica
"Quinn and Coburn endow their roles with humanness, humor and strength." - Variety
Concerned that their children aren't growing up as "civilized" as they would in their native England, a couple decides to leave Jamaica and return home and return home with their family. However, when they inadvertently find their way onto a pirate ship, the children befriend, outwit and even frighten their shipmates. James Coburn and Anthony Quinn are thoroughly entertaining as two lovable rogues, and Deborah Baxter is mesmerizing as young Emily Thornton. Richard Hughes' adaptation of his novel is engaging and haunting in this unforgettable well-crafted film.

"A High Wind..." Bows To Censors, Losing Realism - bwod
While "A High Wind In Jamaica" had the potential to be a raw, frightening pirate story, the screenplay chose to take a more "Disneyesque" approach. When children inadvertently stow away on a marauding pirate ship, the adventure begins. But this is Hollywood (England) so rough and tumble savages who in reality raped and pillaged their victims, suddenly become tame, to the point of falling in love with their passengers (Stockholm Syndrome?). The production is first-rate, with Anthony Quinn at the helm as Captain Chavez. James Cosburn plays his first mate, but in a muted kind of way. He wasn't menacing at all. To get a PG rating, this swashbuckler watered down the sex and violence
to the point that it just wasn't credible. Too bad. I give it one limp thumb up.
