On Valentine's Day
Horton Foote's
It is 1917 in the town of Wharton, Texas. On Valentine's Day, young Elizabeth Vaughn (Hallie Foote) defies her wealthy parents by running off and marrying a young man of humble prospects. Her parents have not spoken to her since her marriage, even though the couple lives in a rooming house nearby; they are struggling financially, and she is pregnant.
This film, to some extent autobiographical, is based on the story of writer Horton Foote's mother and father.
On Valentine's Day is about the unselfish love between a man and a woman, about abiding love within a family, about the emptiness of living without love - all enduring themes of human existence.

TYPICAL SMALL TOWN! - Whirlwind
Interesting depiction of how people really know one another in a small town in days gone by. Enjoyed seeing a few actors that have gone on to other things (Matthew Broderick & Steven Hill)but this film played a part in their progress. Not everyone will like this one, but it showed how people deal with things and how cordial and respectful people were to one another. There was a kindness and consideration with people that we just don't have today. Life didn't move as fast probably and that was good.Unfortunately, boring. - Isis59
This story was actually quite cute, but far too slow and the plot didn't go anywhere interesting. Would have been better to television. I enjoy period films but would definitely give this one a pass. It is the story of a husband and wife from opposite sides of the tracks and forced to live a simple life. Sounds like a descent plot, but not so.
