Jefferson in Paris
Thomas Jefferson (Nick Nolte) spent five years as the U.S. ambassador to France, where he romanced a married woman, Maria Cosway (Greta Scacchi), and began a torrid affair with a young black slave named Sally Hemings (Thandie Newton), who later gave birth to his child. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars as Jefferson's daughter Patsy in this film that takes a look at the less-talked-about exploits of an American icon.

Another fine Merchant/Ivory film - Ralston_McTodd
The draw for this film will be the love affairs of Thomas Jefferson. Instead, it should be the treatment of the place and period. Merchant/Ivory films are always a delight for the beauty of the production. Some viewers might find this one slow-moving, but that's often a virtue in period pieces. Nick Nolte is probably not anyone's first choice to play Jefferson, but he does well in this ensemble piece. It's well worth an evening's viewing.Nick Nolte's best performance - Samiam
I am not much of a Nick Nolte fan, but this is his best performance in a film to date. The movie is not overly sentimental, as american historical films tend to be. The screenplay and cinematography are excellent. I enjoyed this film far more than I had expected to.
