too dark for kidds, too weird for adults - kanesmom
I found this movie too dark and not child friendly (violence, disturbing characters, etc.); yet it was not appealing to the adults either. It took too long for the main characters to transform into the characters of mario and luigi that the kids are familiar with. Despite all this, I think my kids did actually like it (but they love anything remotely associated with the game.)Expect Nothing.... - Snipes
...I mean really, during this time of the early 90s a lot of game-to-movie productions were being released and were any of them really good? Well it depends on how you looked at it.
I gave this movie 4 stars simply because it entertained me, but I could only be entertained because I allowed myself to see past the terrible story line, spotty acting jobs, and sub-par special effects.
If you're just looking to be entertained, this movie will do that for you, even if you can't see past the bad in the movie, I think you'd still entertain yourself laughing at how bad it is!
All in all, this movie is still entertaining and really fun to watch if you have a couple hours to kill.I don't know how this didn't win an oscar. - MattyB
How can you not like a movie called "Super Mario Brothers" that has nothing to do with the Super Mario Brothers at all? Bob Hoskins is okay as Mario. John Leguizamo is funny as Luigi. Dennis Hopper is great as Bowser. Toad rules. The inventions make no sense. Somewhere along the line the translation from video game to live-action went terribly, terribly wrong. The special effects budget is demented for such a mentally incapacitated film. The animated opening hints at lots of drug use. And after it's all over, the movie leaves it open for a sequel. "Super Mario Brothers" is one of the coolest stupid movies ever. "BOB-OMB!!"
