A Century of Science Fiction
Revered horror-film star Christopher Lee narrates this journey through 100 years of silver screen sci-fi, including footage from rarely seen gems such as "God Told Me To" and absorbing interviews with actor Vincent Price and science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury. While the documentary merely glances over the 1950s -- a period marked by many science-fiction milestones -- it provides an entertaining overview of the genre's memorable moments.

I wanted this to be soooooo much better. The problem is, Chris Lee reads the text like he's sleepwalking through it, even mispronounces a few words, and the clips are mostly old PD trailers rather than highlights from the films. Doesn't look like they went to any great trouble or expense to make this work. THE highlight for me was seeing modern day interviews with some of the actors; e.g., Vincent Price or Francis Lederer. Watching someone age 50 years instantly is a sobering thing.Review, A Century of Science Fiction - LisaYvette
I rented the documentary, A Century of Science Fiction, with much anticipation. Unfortunately, this film proved quite disappointing. The core concept of the documentary is good: organize science fiction films of the twentieth century into a variety of themes and display excerpts of each film. On the positive side, this documentary provides glimpses of older and lesser-known science fiction films. However, the documentary suffers from a stilted and not very informative narrative; Christopher Lee as narrator supplies little enthusiasm for the subject. Many of the chosen themes, such as "monsters", are elementary, while analysis of the films is underdeveloped. More important science fiction films such as 2001, A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner, receive brief mentions. The documentary does not reflect on the evolution of science fiction film across the twentieth century and fails to compare and contrast different films adequately. The overall tone of the documentary is glib and amateurish; the field of 20th century science fiction film deserves a more serious and credible effort.
