Digging to China

In 1960s North Carolina, a precocious 10-year-old girl (Evan Rachel Wood) has fantasies of escaping her unhappy home, a motel run by her mother (Cathy Moriarty) and "sister" (Mary Stuart Masterson). When she befriends a mentally disabled man (Kevin Bacon) on his way to an institution, the pair's close bonds ignite town gossip that threatens to break them apart. The film marks actor Timothy Hutton's directorial debut.
