Spirits of the Dead
Three Tales of the Macabre by Edgar Allan Poe
Three giants of world cinema conspire to bring the dark prose of Edgar Allan Poe to the screen in Spirits of the Dead. Roger Vadim, Luis Malle, and Federico Fellini direct Jane and Peter Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, and Terence Stamp in three separate stories of souls tormented by their own phantasmal visions of guilt, lust, and greed.

three well known directors and a brilliant author .... how is it there is so little to note in these three pieces? Fellini is just so .... Fellini. he could have done this in his sleep. i'm giving it three stars cause i can't say i disliked it. i am completely neutral on all three of these pieces. i am probably most disappointed in Louie Malle's section, as i have so much respect for his movies.Get the Arrow Blu-ray release if you can - gnox
This DVD offers only the French-dubbed soundtrack of the Fellini segment, Toby Dammit. But the late 2010 Arrow Blu-ray release restores the soundtrack originally recorded under Fellini's supervision, which has Terence Stamp speaking in English and the other actors in Italian, so that the voices sync with the picture. It makes a huge difference to one of Fellini's best films. The other two are not such classics but still worth watching -- though the acting in the first (Vadim) segment really is pretty bad.Unwatchable - George_Sly
Frankly my dear, I hate this film. It reeks. Phoney European atmosphere, European upper-class homosexuality and lesbianism, phoney acting. I think each director and each story is imbued with it.
Anyways, the picture is good, the dialog is French, subtitles are English. Jane Fonda is nice but queer little old Roger Vadim keeps dragging her into lesbian scenes. Brigitte Bardot plays two roles in the second part, which is not as queer. Note that she does a nude scene - another case where the rating is negligent.
You can have it.
