Jarring images, powerful acting - AvidOscarBee
This movie is a revelation in many ways into giving you a bird's eye view of slavery and what it must have been like for slaves to be brought over on ships this way. The horror that each one faced, whether men or women is portrayed in a very graphic and realistic way capturing the sensitivity of the situation. I applaude the director for taking on such a monumental task and to film most of it in Africa which made it seems more real. At times, this movie is hard to watch and the realisation that racism exists in the human psyche is even more haunting in this present day and age. You will see the life of a kidnapped African slave who fights for his life in this powerful drama. The traders were brutal, calculating and evil. Money seems to always be the root of people's evil. Djimon Hounsou is always a joy to watch as he evokes such power in his eyes and physical presence. Hearing the powerful voice of Eartha Kitt is a real treat. There were times when I lost interest in this movie and it was very hard to hear the dialogue, but overall a good movie that could have captured more on how the slaves were abducted, why they were being examined and the meaning behind this. Powerful acting, jarring images and the music is both haunting and realistic to the African beat.
