Hockey Night
Paul Shapiro directs this Canadian homage to the country's greatest sport: hockey. In a small town, an eager coach (Rick Moranis) tries to build a first-rate boy's team that will stand up to squads from neighboring communities. But truly gifted athletes are scarce, and he can't find any who are up to the task. That is, until he comes across a teenager (Megan Follows) who can stop any puck in its tracks. The problem? The wanna-be goalie is a girl.

Set and filmed in Parry Sound, Ontario, with "big games" against Orilla, Petebourgh, and North Bay, and staring a young Megan Follows, this is certainly a Canadian film through and through.
So, a girl wants to play boys hockey. Well, this must be about her difficulties in being allowed to play, right? Nope. She tries out, and she makes the team.
Then it must be about how the team won't accept her, right? Nope. No problems there.
Hmm, then it must be about the league not letting her play, yeah? Well, there's a little of that, but not much.
All this is, at the end of the day, is a teen romance movie, and not a particularly good one. It has a real vintage Degrassi Jr. High feel to it, but is so tame, it makes that show look edgy. The production values are that of a Beachcombers episode.
This has a bit of nostalgic charm for those of us that were teens in the 80s, but not much more. It might appeal to 10 to 12 year olds.......if this were still 1984.
