Murder in New Hampshire
Academy Award winner Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets) stars in a sexy, sordid, haunting story that echoes the powerful impact of To Die For and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

What are you looking for in this movie? A suspenseful thriller? Perhaps a thoughtful probe into the mind of the sociopathic Smart or even the angst young teens that participated in the crime. Courtroom drama? Maybe you just want to learn more about this famous case. Well, it really doesn’t matter. Although this case was great fodder for movie material, the movie is a bomb on all accounts.
Any chance as a suspenseful thriller was destroyed off the top when the creators chose to show us the murder scene first. It was evident that the rest of the movie was going to be a fairly dry account of the sappy events leading up the actual crime. There was a bit of hope for some court room drama but alas that never developed either.
The passion displayed in the make out scenes between Helen Hunt and Chad Allen was not nearly enough to convince me that this teenager was aroused to the point of committing murder for his mistress. Casting was probably the problem here. Allen was sixteen at the time of filming so there was a limit to how far they could take these scenes. Perhaps an older youthful-looking actor would have been a better choice. I know this movie was made for TV but even Disney channel puts out steamier scenes than these and it’s crucial to the plot.
As an historical account of the Smart murder case, it was useless. The movie never got beyond the basic premise behind the case. It was so void of any of the actual evidence in the case, one can't help but conclude that the researchers just got down right lazy in this department. The proof is in the pudding as they say. I knew not one more thing about the case at the end of the movie then I did at the beginning nor did I have any better understanding of Pamela Smart’s motivation to commit murder.
My final word of advice. Read the jacket or the synopsis on zip.ca. You’ll find it every bit as informative and almost as entertaining.
