Ah, the backwoods in the 30's! A gentler time. I loved the pace of this movie. Actually I loved the whole movie. Laura Dern's shining moment, as far as I can see, and Diane Ladd is terrific as the mother of the clan. The little boy is also credible, and of course Robert Duvall is perfect. My favorite line from the film is him saying to Rose "put that tit away", and wondering if he should have her "fixed" to calm her down. But Rose is just a naieve young girl, coming of age in this house, and helping the younger son of the family come of age right along with her. As an adult, he remembers this time with great fondness and no regret.
A Charming story, a good movie.Sweet. Charming. Moving. - cathyottawa
This pet-project of Laura Dern's garnered oscars nominations for both her, and her mother, Diane Ladd.
Set in the 30s, Dern plays a young girl, taken in by an upper/middle class family to be a maid and help with the children.
The story is told through the oldest son, played by Lukas Haas. It's very much a coming of age story, both for Haas's character, and Dern's.
Dern plays a naive girl, who falls in love at the drop of a hat, and willingly uses her sexuality in an innocent attempt to claim that love.
The supporting cast is stellar, with Diane Ladd playing the matriarch of the household. An early feminist, she gives an unforgettable speach in defence of Rose.
The always reliable Robert Duvall is spot on as Ladd's loving husband, who cares for Rose, but isn't sure what to do with her when she brings discord into the house.
And finally, Lukas Haas is wonderful is his portrayal of a boy on the cusp of puberty, dealing with the issues that come with it.
