Thomas and the Magic Railroad
The big-screen adaptation of PBS's "Shining Time Station" hauls in some high-wattage star power. Alec Baldwin plays the diminutive Mr. Conductor, who must find more gold dust or risk never getting to Thomas' island again. Meanwhile, Thomas the steam engine and company must race against a pack of tough diesel engines to protect the island. Can Thomas make it in time … without Mr. Conductor?

Stay away if you can!! This badly produced hodgepodge puts everything Thomas appear in a bad light. A pathetic script (sporting a storyline so stupid it hurts), flat characters, super bad acting, and worst of all, a relentless grueling score from a third rate composer. A low point if there ever was one.I'll Take the Middle Road on Thomas the Tank Engine Movie - TheShamus
My two year-old daughter like Thomas, but prefers other shows like, "The Wiggles" and "Max and Ruby". She likes trains a lot. I thought I would try, "Thomas and the Magic Railroad.
When writing a review for a toddler show, I'm not sure if I should review it from her perspective or my perspective. I think it is the childs perspective which really matters ... but lets face it, parent often end up watching more than we would like to.
The first time around, my daughter watched this one about 5 minutes. I tried another day, and she watched it with split attention for most of the movie. There were parts which kept her attention, and parts which did not interest her much.
The thing that sets this movie apart from the regular show are the "live action" sequences. For most of the movie, we are watching regular non-animated scene, then a cut away to the animation --- and it goes back and forth. This technique works okay ... but when the two characters start interacting frequently, it's annoying.
A good childrens/toddler film or TV show should have good editting and production values regardless of who the target audience is. Thomas is a cute show, but this story is disappointing for Thomas fans. Also --- you have to ask yourself where "Thomas" is ... when he is the star of the show. The amount of screen time has to make you wonder.
There are lots of videos which can hold a child's attention --- and the really good ones can teach them a lot while they watch it. If you have a toddler who likes Thomas, this seems like a reasonable release. Some kids may not have the attention span. If you are looking for something educational, there are a lot of better releases out there.

My kids loved watching this movie over and over again. It's a bit of a transition from the regular thomas ovies but they did enjoy it, my kids are 5 and 3. It's nice to have something over 30 min long the length was nice. If you are looking for a good way for your kids to spend the afternoon and they like trains this would be a good way!
