Doing Time On Maple Drive
Every Family Has Its Secrets.
Superstar Jim Carrey (Me, Myself & Irene, TV's In Living Color) turns in an unforgettable dramatic performance in this "powerful" (Variety) family drama. Phil Carter and his devoted wife Lisa are the proud but domineering parents of a near-perfect family that has gathered to celebrate the upcoming marriage of its youngest son. But soon, the gathering turns to confrontation as secrets of each of the Carters' three children are revealed. Phil and Lisa are forced to take a closer look at reality and at the same time, keep their family from falling apart.

Slow Start But Decent Ending - newdaysof
The movie started off very slowly and was excruciatingly boring for about an hour. Then suddenly, it became interesting.
It was interesting to see Jim Carrey in a serious dramatic role for a change. He should do more films like this one.
The story deals with parents who expect their children to be perfect, but each one of them has personal issues to deal with that the parents don't want to deal with.Behind Closed Doors. - cathyottawa
This is the story of a dysfunctional family.
We have a father who will accept nothing less than the constant strive for perfection from his family, and we have a mother who's whole existence is about appearances, and making sure everyone thinks her family is flawless.
Then we have the three kids. One is an alcoholic (Jim Carrey, in an early dramatic role), one is a closeted homosexual, and one will go to extremes to avoid disappointing her parents.
All of these issues boil over during one family visit.
This movie does a good job of making the viewer feel uncomfortable for the kids. They haven't been subject to flat out abuse, but you'll be glad you didn't grow up in that house.
My problem with this movie, is that it brings up all of these big issues, but doesn't seem to have alot to say about any of them. I was left kind of wondering what the point was. Still, it was made at a time when homosexuality was a rather taboo subject, and there are some great scenes towards the end.
It is very much a TV movie though, with a bit of an "after school special" feel to it.BORG69 - BORG69
One of the awesomest movie ever done from the early nineties that shows true hardship for an individual going through life and accepting his sexuality and coming out to his family. This was one of my first gay movies I seen on television that I truely enjoy and still do to this day. Glad to have it in my dvd library.
