A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this thriller. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent, offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. The Mann Does it Again - Josh_J
Michael Mann has proven himself able to convincingly bring to the screen a diverse array of films from historical epics (The Last of the Mohicans), to biographic films (Ali), to thought-provoking political dramas (The Insider). However, there is one type of film that Mann does better than anyone else: the crime thriller. From 'Thief', to 'Miami Vice', 'Heat' and now 'Collateral'. A superb, stylish and interesting action thriller with Tom Cruise as the slick hitman Vincent, and Jamie Foxx as Max, the cabbie with high aspirations. Snappy dialogue, mesmerizing digital cinematography and a great soundtrack all come together to create an absolutely riveting crime-thriller that holds its own as a character-driven film, as is customary in a movie by Michael Mann.Taught action-suspense with cliché ending - Candureactor
If you're looking for a film that will get your blood running and your heart pounding, take a look at Collateral. Be ready to suspend your beliefs in “reality” for two hours. As my partner said at the beginning, “why can’t I get a taxi driver who can speak in more than one syllable and knows where he is going?” The answer of course is that the taxi driver (Jimmie Foxx) is an actor and it’s only a movie.
The film is the product of Michael Mann, best known for his break-through television series, Miami Heat. Like most of his work, Mann infuses style and a great music track (from Latin to Jazz to Mexican Country—a weird bit of levity in a particularly tense moment) into a violent, crime-filled setting that is visually stimulating and filmed in a pallet of stylized colours. Shot primarily as a series of close ups the script is tight and the dialogue witty and at points down-right funny. For example, following the first murder, the killer (Tom Cruise) says to his driver, “Hey Lady Macbeth, the light is green.”
While much has been made of Cruise playing a bad guy, the story is really about the character portrayed by Foxx. (Collateral may be worth a look if you liked him in Ray). The story is about a man who wants to be more that he is but can never seem to pull away from what is comfortable and familiar. The series of killings finally seems to shock the driver into action and the subsequent destruction of his taxi is a liberating moment for him. The rest of the show runs towards a predictable but satisfying conclusion where the downtrodden driver becomes an individualistic hero on a mission to save the girl (love interest played by Jada Pinkett Smith) from her deadly fate.
I don’t want to spoil the ending for you, but let’s just say that Hollywood creates and fulfills your expectation in the end.
