I have to say, I was hoping for a different kind of film. This "documentary" is mostly live performances by the band, taken from a few shows, interspersed with random footage of the band hanging out. If you have the "Live at the Metro" DVD, and have seen the footage of their Woodstock performance, then you've seen 75% of this film already.
For a band with such an interesting story, the documentary could have been a lot more interesting. Blind Melon's popularity was overshadowed for a long time by the "bee girl" in their No Rain video. They were relatively small fish in an era of bands such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Shannon's drug abuse and sometimes erratic behaviour was often problematic. Ultimately, even Shannon Hoon's death was a blip on the radar in a time when everyone was still thinking about Kurt Cobain's suicide.
An exploration of these sorts of issues would have been fascinating to me. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy Letters From a Porcupine - but I feel like it stayed pretty close to the surface the whole time. I'd say it was good, but not great.Amazing - Sterman
I have always been a Blind Melon fan... In fact it always bothered me when people refer to them as one hit wonders. They are incredible. In recent years, i had lost interest in their stuff though... as time passes by we tend to forget how good something was. Watching this DVD however, i realised again how special Blind Melon was. I also remember how much of a loss Shannon's death was. If he were alive today, he would be know as one of the best singers out there. This DVD is a MUST!!!
