The Perez Family
In this romantic comedy, Dottie Perez (Marisa Tomei), a Cuban woman, longs for a very American life, one that centers on rock 'n' roll music and cowboys. Juan Raul Perez (Alfred Molina) seeks to be reunited with his wife, Carmela (Anjelica Huston), in America. When Dottie and Juan are rescued from a failed boat lift, the two are listed as married … which complicates their American dreams quite a bit!

I agree with the other viewers that Marisa Tomei was luminescent in this film. But i found it to be a little pedantic at times. I was expecting funnier, but the humour was in general only luke warm. However, the individual characters were riviting. I loved Anjelica Huston as Carmella and really felt the connection between her and Raoul. Because of that, I wasn't convinced by the way the movie ends. I found the ending a little unbelievable and sad given the circumstances.Marisa Tomei Sizzles. - cathyottawa
She is luminecent in this film, and just smolders on screen. I'm surprised she didn't get more attention for this role - she's better here than she was in My Cousin Vinnie (her Oscar winning performance).
This is a comedy of errors, set in 1980 Miami. Yes, that's the year Castro emptied his prisons, and allowed mass emigration to America. Hoards of Cubans were detained while the US Imigration department tried to sort things out.
Dorita Perez (Tomei) finds out that families get priority, and so convinces some fellow Perez's to pose as her family members. Will Juan Raul, posing as her husband, leave this makeshift family when he is reunited with his wife, who has been waiting in Miami for 20 years? Or is this "fake" family where he really belongs....
If Tomei hadn't been in this film, I wouldn't have enjoyed it half as much as I did. It follows a fairly predictable path, and I've never really liked Anjelica Huston - I just don't think she's a good actress.
But this is well worth the rental just for Tomei, and the great chemistry she has with Alfred Molina (Juan Raul).
