Cause Celebre
Helen Mirren stars as Alma Rattenbury, a British woman in her mid-thirties who's married to a much older man, but is in love with her 18-year-old chauffeur, George Bowman. The film is based on a real-life scandal that began when Alma "discovered" her husband brutally beaten with a blunt object and took him to the hospital, where he soon died. Afterward, Alma confessed to the murder as a crime of passion.

This is a fine television reproduction of a play.
The murdered man was Francis Rattenbery, a well known architect in British Columbia who, amongst other buildings, designed the BC Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel in Victoria as well as the Vancouver Court House (at present the Art Gallery)A very good movie - MovieLover
FINALLY, a movie to admire--the genuine article.
It's been my considerable misfortune to see a lot of unfunny boring movies lately.
This one is very different, with a first class script by Terrance Rattigan, an absolutely first class cast, a very good story.
Helen Mirren is very good as the passionate woman in her 30s who falls hopelessly for an 18 year old young man.
The picture scorns the fickleness of this world and those who inhabit it.
David Suchet is his usual impeccable self as the lawyer, an easy relaxed wonderful performance. A treat to watch a real actor at work.
But the entire cast is good.
Highly recommended.
