Feast of July
Based on the H.E. Bates novel of the same name, this Merchant-Ivory drama stars Embeth Davidtz as a pregnant woman abandoned by her lover who's taken in by a farmer after she collapses and miscarries her baby. The farmer's three sons vie for her affections, but it's the youngest who restores her faith in love. Their nuptial plans unravel, however, when her old beau returns. Co-stars Tom Bell, Greg Wise and Gemma Jones.

a feast and a famine - billie
the disc stopped playing in the middle so we missed a lot, but generally a lovely, leisurely Merchant Ivory production, lush in setting and photography. The story was like a Thomas Hardy, very stern and educational. People had it tough then! Very much enjoyed this even with the break in the middle. I give the film four stars but the disc no stars.
