This extraordinary film is based on the real-life story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a teenager disfigured by elephantiasis. With the help of his mother Rusty's (Cher) love and fierce determination, Rocky overcomes pain, loneliness and prejudice as his face becomes more and more mask-like, ultimately becoming an inspiration to his classmates and teachers. Peter Bogdanovich directs, and Sam Elliott co-stars.

Un très bon film a louer! Histoire Vraie. - Gladiator
Un très beau film de Peter Bogdanovich, une histoire bouleversante racontée avec sincérité par un cinéaste à redécouvrir. Ce film est tiré d'une histoire vraie, celle de Rocky Dennis, un jeune homme atteint d'une maladie rare qui le défigure. La mise en scène est sobre et efficace, il arrive à instaurer une histoire émouvante et bouleversante sans tomber dans le larmoyant et la bêtise. Cher est magnifique dans le rôle de la mère instable de Rocky, elle obtient là le plus beau rôle de femme forte de toute sa carrière, Sam Elliot n'est pas en reste et nous offre une interprétation plus que remarquable, Eric Stolz qui joue Rocky réussit à rendre attachant ce jeune homme en mal d'amour. Rocky n'est pas un garçon qui se repose sur ses lauriers, il veut devenir quelqu'un et il a des rêves. La musique du film est particulièrement bien trouvée et la palette des personnages secondaires est sympathique.Deeply Moving And Wonderfully Cast - revsdd
Funny in places, emotional all the way through and bittersweet at the end, this is an excellent portrayal of the last year or so in the life of Rocky Dennis, a teenager living with a hideously deformed face as the result of a rare disease. Rocky clearly had challenges - and not all of them revolved around his face. His mom had a drug problem, and he spends his time hanging out with a tough looking group of bikers, at least some of whom are also into drugs. And yet, this is his world, and - for all their problems - these people are his family; they're the ones who accept him and love him unconditionally and look out for him. Seeing this relationship with the bikers (and especially the voiceless Dozer) is as fascinating as anything else in the movie. Rocky has been told he doesn't have much time to live, but he does have dreams: a bike trip to Europe with a friend, and he wants to fall in love with someone. The dreams keep him going. He goes to a summer camp for blind children as a counsellor, and falls in love with Diana - a beautiful but blind girl who's able to see the beauty inside him. But then he goes home, and it all falls apart. His friend moves to Michigan, and the dream of Europe is gone; his new girlfriend's parents don't want her to have anything to do with him, and his dream of love is gone. With his dreams shattered, there's not much left for Rocky to look forward to. The shattering of his dreams is perfectly depicted by the scene in which he pulls the tacks off the map of Europe where he's been marking all the places he wanted to visit. You know it's happening, but the scene when his mom goes into his room and finds him dead in bed still can't help but put a few tears in your eyes.
The cast was very strong. Cher, Eric Stoltz and Laura Dern played their parts perfectly, and I especially enjoyed Sam Elliott as Gar - Rocky mom's biker boyfriend. He looked, sounded and acted the part brilliantly. It's a very moving movie.Sad to think this was even partly true - Chucky
Rocky Denis, a teenage boy with all the hopes and asperations of any lad facing adolesence and his place in the world. His really big dream was to go to Katmandu with his best pal. As Rocky makes his way in the world he faces love and prejudice in equal quantity, on his side though is his tough as nails mother (portrayed by Cher)with a nasty drug habit and a boyfriend that just happens to be the head of a hard nosed, hell raising motercycle gang. The acting is good the plot exclent, the outcome......preordained? A great family movie I'd watch it again
