flawed but still entertaining film. - barkersbeauties
This Indie crime thriller is set in in the Louisiana bayous and in New Orleans and cinematography is outstanding and this alone could almost carry the film.
Dave ( Alec Baldwin ) is an ex-cop and a recovering alcoholic who tries is trying to start a new life with a beautiful wife Annie (Kelly Lynch. The action is fast paced and important character are killed as the ex-detective is forced back in the seedy under world of New Orleans and who live or have visited this city can easily identify all the amazing architectural designs Claudette (Teri Hatcher) is the femme fatale and in her first scene she is full frontal naked and that may or may not be reason to investigate this flawed but still entertaining film. Why all the hate? - CaptainRhodes
Come on folks! This movie ain't so bad. Alec Baldwin carries the flick nicely while the story unfolds. I didn't feel my time was wasted and I guess that says enough.
USELESS FACTS:
Originally slated for release in the fall of 1994 when Savoy Pictures (who originally produced and financed the film to it's competition) delayed it. The film was then slated for a 1995 release by the studio, but was finally shelved again because Savoy Pictures had folded in Bankruptcy. Last of the Dogmen was the final film released under the Savoy Pictures banner. Heaven's Prisoners and a few of the remaining titles that had been delayed for release by Savoy, were picked up by other studios. New Line Cinema finally released the film in the Spring of 1996.
The name of the character Alafair in the movie and book is the real name of the author's (James Lee Burke) own daughter, who is now also a writer.Famous bomb fails to entertain on pretty much any level - Superdave
The tens of millions lost by this box office bust set back the careers of stars Alec Baldwin, Eric Roberts and Teri Hatcher a few years, but also proved that if you are going to make a crime thriller, it helps to put in a few actual thrills, or maybe come up with a plot that makes sense. The story probably worked in its first draft, but the meandering, almost random string of events in the movie have the feel of a script that underwent too many re-writes. Plus, it's filled with unsavory types who all seem to be running some twisted game, but instead of combining these threads together the script just lets them hang. The viewer spends too much time trying to recall who is up to what and then when nothing comes of it all, gives up interest. The movie also tries early on for a hothouse Southern Gothic atmosphere, but fails to generate it, thanks to too much time wasted on Eric Roberts' character's boxing obsession, and the fact that Hatcher's femme fatale act is played out too sparingly and seems unrelated to anything until it's too late for the audience to care. Baldwin's central performance is not very interesting and it is never clear whether we should sympathize with him or just hang around waiting to see if he gets whacked. Kelly Lynch is apparently in the movie too, but her character seems superfluous and sketchy, as if her part changed at some point and was cut down. The result is an incomplete performance that again fails to generate much interest. This pretty much sums up the movie. An attractive cast of good actors hang around expensive southern plantation sets posturing with one another and it all just fails to go anywhere. No wonder it flopped. It's not awful, but nothing here really works at all. D-
