They Drive by Night
George Raft and Humphrey Bogart play brothers who are trying to make a living as truck drivers during the debilitatingly bleak Depression era. When criminal elements realize the brothers are managing to put a dent into their business, they resolve to track them down, run them off and close their operation. But they didn't count on the siblings being so resourceful or determined. Co-stars Ida Lupino and Alan Hale.

We would rent ANYTHING with Ida Lupino--but here--sexy evil seductress! What else do you need to recommend in a movie? The only slight disappointment is the Bogart character sort of disappears, and he is (as always) so great in this. But wow, what a thrill ride.Classic Drama About Two Brothers' Struggle To Make It In The Trucking Business - bwod
Directed by Raoul Walsh and featuring a fine ensemble cast (Humphrey Bogart in a supporting role). Ida Lupino was a young ingenue at the time, but she absolutely wows the audience with her manic performance. For any one interested in classic Hollywood, this 1940 film noir is a must-see. Two thumbs up. Interesting bonus material included.A classic story well done - Curmudgeon
A story of its times, with some improbable bits, like truck drivers in the 30's dressed in black tie, however the story endures. Great performances from the stars, both Raft and Bogart toning down their tough guy persona's. Ida Lupino playing to type with her patented OCD woman role. And Ann Sheridan gives a great turn at the beginning as the hard boiled waitress.
And the movie does give a little insight into the how and why of growth of the Teamsters Union. Crappy vehicles, crooked brokers, and all the rest of it.
Worth renting and worth watching.
