Demonlover (Director's Cut)
"A diabolical techno thriller."-Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Olivier Assayas' Demonlover takes us deep into the underbelly of the illicit and financially lucrative world of 3D animated pornography. With billions at risk, Diane (Connie Nielsen) is hired into a high stakes game of espionage, which leads her to the twisted world of the Hellfire Club, an interactive torture website. Her bid to gain fortune quickly becomes a frantic race to survive as she is challenged by her amoral colleague (Charles Berling), an antagonistic and mysterious assistant (Chloe Sevigny) and an outspoken, pot-smoking American executive (Gina Gershon).

Having watched Assayas' Clean, I thought Demonlover might be a sophisticated film. It was a disappointment.
The story seemed promising until the plot thickened and tangled itself into a convoluted web. The exploration of reality vs. virtual reality simply became a sequence of forgetful events.
Demonlover should be kept in the out of print hell.DemonLover - Coco
Just call it Digital Drome. Assayas’ film (or Cronenbergean jazz suite, if you will) will be written about at great length in one hundred years, like Conrad’s Secret Agent was in the last years of the 20th Century. This is pure epochal cinema, summing up how we do business and summing up how everything we do is "just business" while at once entering uncharted structural and formal waters that feel eerily familiar because this is a director in full control of his craft even if chaos is, after all, his canvas. People have trouble understanding what is happening in this film…this is not their fault! I have trouble understanding what is happening in this film. The characters have trouble understanding what is happening in this film. Something is being encapsulated here, on both sides of the fourth wall, and you feel it queasily in yr diaphragm; not unlike watching yr TV and seeing two simulacra skyscrapers crumbling into the concrete.

Well I didn't really know what to expect with this film but i had heard it was inetesting and worth watching. While the film looks great and has a nice soundtrack by Sonic Youth, it ultimately came off as a failure for me.
The plot was very confusing, leaving me wondering what was going on most of the time and having no real understanding of the motives behind anyones actions in the film. It was interesting looking into a world (anime porn) that i have had no exposure to in the past but it gave no real insight into anything. I didn't care for any of the characters and the plot was so misguided and meaningless that the story was a complete waste of time.
So why even give it two stars? Well like i said it looks great and has a nice style, and the soundtrack is very cool and atmospheric making the film seem much better than it really is. And the performances must be commended as I'm sure it was tough to work with such confusing and muddled material.
So check it out if you are still interested but it may leave you scratching your head and feeling a little unfulfilled.
