This film starts out very slowly and manages to keep that pace for its 1 1/2 hour running time. The one positive was seeing Laura Dern in her younger years. While the overall level of the acting was satisfactory, the directing was unfocused Maybe the plot would gave been a wow in the early '80's, its another example of not being able to go back there except rarely.Smooth but Slow - PopGun_Edwards
Portraying what is probably the closest rendition of the lives and dreams of teenage girls in the mid-1980s, Smooth Talk is smooth, but rather slow moving. One is left thinking this film could be so much more. Perhaps its lost potential is in part due to its screening as a made-for-TV movie. A story like this almost begs for a remake...Fairly good - spoilers ahead - FodderMK
Don't let my rating deter you from this film, it is well done. I just didn't care for it much. The characters are quite real and down to earth, and some of the scenes were fantastic. One was so tense that I had to fast forward because it made me feel so horribly uncomfortable. Keep in mind if you like the story this movie is based upon, you are in store for a 180 degree turn as far as the ending goes.
