Jimmy Hollywood
One Thing Stands Between Jimmy And Stardom. Reality.
It's a crime what Jimmy Alto will do to get a break.
Oscar winner Joe Pesci and Christian Slater are at their finest in this wildly funny look at Hollywood from acclaimed director Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Bugsy).
Struggling actor Jimmy Alto (Joe Pesci) can't get arrested. But the criminals that terrorize his neighborhood are making a killing. So Jimmy makes a bold career move. With the help of his loyal but spaced-out best friend (Slater), Jimmy transforms himself into "Jericho," leader of a moch-vigilante group that videotapes criminals then turns them over to the police. It's the role of a lifetime, but when Jimmy gets caught in a crossfire between the cops and the crooks, it looks like it could be his last.

Relaxing, long movie, albeit quite slow paced - Porkchop
Jimmy Hollywood (1994) with Joe Pesci, Christian Slater, Victoria
Abril (of Pedro Almodovar fame, in Spain) is a pleasant near 2-hour
movie, albeit quite slow paced for the great majority of viewers.
The most valuable aspect here, is the relaxing, simplistic at
times, somewhat Forrest Gump-like vision of the world, by the
character played by Joe Pesci. The latter actors has a neurotic
obsession with the acting world, lines said by famous actors, in
famous films from the more recent (and less recent films), intent
on making it big, in Hollywood.
Another aspect is the presentation of Sunset Blvd, Hollywood in
general, the laying out of what the area looks like today, as
compared to 100 years ago, in a very superficial way, of course,
and the rapport with his pal ( played by Christian Slater ) and
girlfriend ( played by Victoria Abril ).
Perhaps this movie would have worked much better for most viewers,
with a more rigorous, demanding, precise and aggressive editing, to
reduce it from 2 hours to 90 minutes, which is what most people
prefer.
Overall, this movie is easy to watch, especially for fans of
Pesci's personality, here presented less maniacal that some of the
actor's well-known movies, funny in a sense from start to finish,
never comical to the extreme like other movies also made in his
career (such as THE SUPER or BIG MONEY) which are great comedies.
This is a movie that holds people's attention throughout, and is
good for what it aimed to do.Not as good as I remembered - Solangel
For some reason my husband remembered liking this film and wanted to share it with me. It was definitely not as good as he imagined. Victoria Abril was excellent in this film, but I wonder why she, as a great actress at the time the movie was made, was in such a stupid movie. At least she made it worth watching because for us, her performance was the highlight of the film. Christian Slater was cute, and the relationship between his character and the Joe P. character was touching. But all in all... it was a good idea but we don't think it went anywhere.
