When you sit down to watch a John Waters film you have a pretty good idea of what you're in for. Everything is hyper-real. That's the point. He's trying to make a comment on society in a way that entertains him. And does it entertain others? I suppose that's a matter of opinion. I'm not phased or shocked by sexuality - but I think that the big problem for me is that I didn't quite get the point of it all. Maybe I wasn't trying hard enough. If you're a Waters fan you'll no doubt enjoy it - if not, it might be hard to get into it.Wrong! But why the hell not. - Shmoolix
I thought this movie was fun, of course it's not meant to take seriously, but hey everyone needs love I guess. The Mother in hte movie is the best character by far. She is part of the Neuter society and everytime she is in a scene she is like an old lady version of Joe Pesci. Good movie.Light, but I liked it - judith_in_ottawa
I actually liked this movie, though it's definitely light. It's entirely about sex, sort of like exaggerated porn, with a story line made to hang sex on, but put through an innuendo machine. So the language is crude and the sex acts described or implied are gentle compared to many found in real life. As John Waters says in the commentary, there is no real sex in this movie at all. It's a movie joking about sex and people's attitudes toward sex, and about surreal sexual compulsions.
I really enjoyed the sweet old-fashioned music juxtaposed with chaos and sort-of-sleaze.
By the way, the commentary is as interesting as the movie, and more educational!
