The Last Shot
Straight shooter agent Joe Devine has been assigned to cook up an elaborate scheme to take down infamous mob boss John Gotti. He assumes the role of a Hollywood producer and tells all the right lies to enlist a stooge to help execute his sting. He finds unsuspecting wannabe director Steven Schatz, who'd do just about everything to get the chance to direct a feature. Schatz falls hook, line, and sinker for the pitch, but what Devine doesn't tell Schatz is that the movie will never be made. Everything goes according to plan--until Devine and the suits at the Bureau start enjoying their new lives as Hollywood players a bit too much.

Joe (Alec Baldwin) is proud of the undercover work he does in catching mob guys. When he gets transferred to Providence, he goes all-out to try and bring down Tommy Sanz (Tony Shalhoub). His idea is to pretend to be a movie producer and bring in the mob in the production of it.
Turns out that in Hollywood, it's pretty easy to find a script. Anybody off the street will have one. Meet Matthew Broderick, he plays Steven Schats, the poor schmuck who actually thinks Joe wants to make his movie.
"The Last Shot" is actually very funny. Broderick and Baldwin are very funny together, and all the compromises that Broderick has to make to get his film made are hilarious. Calista Flockhart plays Broderick's actress/girlfriend, and her character is similar to Ally McBeal, but she's funnier.
Unfortunately the story doesn't go far after it's pretty good premise, but it is a short and funny ride. Enjoy "The Last Shot" for what it is - funny, plain and simple.Scatter Shot - Baboonvideo
ZIP-WORTHY IF: You can look past the uneven script and enjoy the solid cast.
REVIEW: Scattershot may have been the better title for The Last Shot, a satire (loosely based on a true story) that, like Get Shorty (1995) and State and Main (2000) before it, argues that anyone can get lured into the thrill of Hollywood and making movies. Unlike those earlier films, however, The Last Shot - though certainly amusing on its own terms - is still a little too haphazard in its structure and comic targets for its own good.
Alec Baldwin stars as a veteran FBI agent who poses as a Hollywood producer as part of a sting to catch a shady mobster (is there any other kind?) and proceeds to begin staging a fake movie without letting anyone else involved know that it is all just a trick. Before long, though, Baldwin's character is so caught up in making movies that he begins to lose track of his real task.
The Last Shot was written and directed by Jeff Nathanson (screenwriter of Catch Me If You Can) and though its central gags grow repetitive, there is no faulting the cast. Along with a wiry Baldwin, we're treated to solid work from Matthew Broderick as a struggling director who thinks this will be his big break and Toni Collette as the film's diva star (Joan Cusack, unfortunately, is stuck once again playing a bitter and ruthless executive).Funny idea but final product lack the laughs - LandPhil
While I watched this movie, I found myself waiting for the big laughs to come and they just never came. There were plenty of great set ups, with the characters and storyline but the problem I believe lies with the script. It just isn't all that funny. There are definitely some funny moments, Toni Collette and Joan Cusack steal the show and Alec Baldwin is funny but you feel like he's being held back. The movie had all these great set ups for what could have been funny situations and they just felt flat. Instead of laughing, you're just mildly amused. This could have been hilarious given the acting talent involved but unfortunately it just fizzles out.
