Very Good Movie - sticksr
I was impressed. Being a retired Chief, I was able to relate. I actually used the movie when it was first released as a Friday night "family night". Instead of our usual drill/practice night, I invited the significant other of each of my men to attend, and it went over very well. Anyway back to the movie. Excellent special effects and great acting. Good for the entire family.Enjoyable - Madamx28
As others have said in here, this movie will appeal to both genders. The storyline is strong and the characters are likeable. Although not my favorite movie I've ever watched it definitely has the ability to hold your attention to the end. Give this movie a try if you're looking for good special effects and a strong plotline.Character-driven as opposed to FX driven - Filmgal
Ladder 49 surprised me. I was expecting more of an action driven film with rampaging fires but instead got a character-driven, emotional film with both humourous and touching moments. There is action and intense moments in the film, but nothign too gripping. It's first and foremost about a family man and hero and his life.
The film is enjoyable and does run the emotional gamut in portraying the life of family fireman Joaquin Phoenix and his relationship to his Chief, John Travolta as a father figure, his relationship with his wife and family, and his co-workers. Not your typical Hollywood ending which is a nice break. The film is told thorugh flashbacks from Joaquin's perspective as a trapped firefighter who contemplates his life as a firefighter and his family life.
Joaquin's role isn't as meaty as his parts in Gladiator or Walk the Line, but his performance is good, nonetheless. John travolta gives and okay perforamnce, nothing special or too memorable.
I wouldn't rush to put it at the top of your Ziplist, but it is worth a spot somewhere in the middle.
