Code 46
Code 46 is a love story set in a Brave New World-type near-future where cities are heavily controlled and only accessible through checkpoints. People cannot travel unless they have "papelles," a special travel permit issued by the totalitarianistic government, the "Sphinx". Outside these cities, the desert has taken over and shanty towns are jammed with non-citizens - people without papelles forced to live primitive lives. William is a family man who works as a government investigator. When he is sent to Shanghai to solve a case of fake papelles, he meets a woman named Maria. Although he realizes she is behind the forgeries, he cannot help but fall completely in love with her. He hides her crime and they have a wild, passionate affair that can only last as long as his papelles: 24 hours. Back home, William is obessed with the memory of Maria. When the original investigation is inevitably re-opened a week later and William is sent back to finish the work he started, he tracks her down, only to discover she has been accused of a Code 46 violation and any further relationship is impossible.

I heard that this movie was good but it wasn't. I love sci-fi, even bad ones that most people don't like. But this one was totally lame. If it's the future, why is he driving a late 1990's minivan? In the future all the races are intermingled and the Chinese speak some Spanish, French and Italian, it's a police state and everything, technological advancements are amazing, except they decided to stop changing cars? Lame. Brutally slow-paced. Seems like it might have been a good book and then they had like no money to make it so they had to get Susan Sarandon's ex-husband. Tainted reality.Awesome vision, awkward delivery - Jason2
This is a highly underrated movie. It will be looked back on as WAY before it's time.
It's slow moving yes, but so is Blade Runner.
There are so many subtle things in this movie that create a truly believable future world. One where languages have begun to blend together, those words with no English counterpart integrating themselves into our culture (We do this today: schadenfreude). Where almost everything is networked, and synthetic life (eg. virus driven learning) is like the vitamins of today.
Spectacular conceptual movie, but unfortunately it's delivery is a little slow.Artful Sci-fi - flickgirl
This has the pacing of an arthouse film and if you can relax you will be rewarded with a moody, subtle, disturbing, even mesmerizing film. The world created in this film has not been fleshed out as fully as in Blade Runner, Dune, or LOR. But even the flatness of the world presented, the pacing and even the acting is in step with the world presented: a totalitarian future where the life has been sucked out of life, leaving it safe but flat. Interesting ideas, solid concept, good actors, decent production. If it had been fleshed out more fully, I would have given it five stars. Scifi fans will enjoy its potentiality but not for the blockbuster viewer.
