great acting, good details - tbird
this film is worth renting for sure. there is good suspense, i thought all the actors were excellent.some of the characters were funny.the clueless store clerk who chocks on her gum and the tow truck driver were priceless.the ending was thought provoking. i thought it was an intelligent film that sort of passed under the radar.Good - rnhaas
This is overall, a pretty damn good movie. The performances are uniformly excellent and the story is pretty compelling. There is one scene with a tow truck which is note perfect. But there is a little too much "hey, I went to film school!", especially in the opening credits. What exactly these film tricks are supposed to achieve, or how they are supposed to improve the otherwise great movie is beyond me. If these things had been left out, the movie probably would have been great instead of good.Undertow - TwoBoggySwampers
This is one of those movies that is very thought provoking and leaves you wondering how you are to interpret the meaning behind it. You can't help but feel for the characters and their individual situations. On one end of the spectrum, you have a father who, at first glance, seems as though he is cold and neglectful toward his children and could at any minute blow his top. As the story unravels and you get to know him, you come to find that he is a kind-hearted, meek and quiet man who is living under a cloud of fatigue and overwhelming sadness. He is a widower raising two sons, is in poverty (although he is working hard to provide), and is in the midst of trying to deal with his emotional troubles. Then you have the two sons. The older of the two is a teen going through all the regular teenage stuff - only it is compounded by the lifestyle of poverty and near isolation, being overworked and under appreciated, and being the big brother and main caretaker to his sickly little brother. The younger son, unknown to his Dad and brother, is causing his own unhealthiness by a secret obsession with binge eating on paint and making himself vomit. He won't eat much regular food and the family thinks it is all to do with anxiety and don't realize the boy is poisoning himself on a regular basis. The story comes to a head when the father's brother shows up out of the blue, freshly released from prison, and decides to stay with the family while he tries to get his feet on the ground. There are some old issues between the father and uncle that resurface. The father is willing to let bygones be bygones, but the uncle can't let go of the past. Because of this, the family's life is turned upside down. From there, it is a tragic journey for the two boys as they try to escape the madness that is going on in their home. This is a movie worthy of your viewing time if you don't mind a change of pace from the mainstream.
