Great Balls of Fire - TheJake
This one starts to burn early on and throughout the entire first 15 minutes of the film, I was hoping that a Phoenix or at least a Penn would come to pour water and sooth the flames. The cavalry never shows up and the film sinks further in ash and smoke. The good news is that I would give this film a rating of 9 out of 10..................... rotten tomatoes that is.The critics just weren't in the right mood! - montyA
This is a romantic mood piece. Sci-fi buffs need to stay away unless they are cuddling on the sofa with someone. The key to the film working for you is (a) you like your films on the small side, unsettling and paced slow (b) you hope that long-lasting love is achievable (c) you wonder if we are strip mining the resources of our souls (let alone the planet) at the expense of making life bearable.
The film starts with Joaquin Phoenix flying into New York to quickly get the divorce papers signed by his separated ice-skating star wife. But already things don't seem right with the couple of goons sent to tell him his wife can't make the signing, and the fact that they are stepping over dead bodies on the way to the baggage pick up. The goons explain that doctors can't figure out why people are dying, but that it is "something to do with the heart".
It's got some clever ideas about the strange things that go wrong as the world shudders to a stop. But it's mostly about a couple who are living through times they can't fully grasp but who can hold onto each other, helpless but made whole by love.Just in case you think it can't be as bad as everyone says... - OhHenry
I read the reviews, I read the cast list. Everyone hated it but I figured it couldn't be that bad. It was that bad. How is it possible that I could have been so wrong about a movie?
The end of the world concept was interesting and it was beautifully shot but I didn't care about any of the characters. Hated, or more accuately, bored with them all. And the summary attached to the movie tells you nothing. If you want an accurate summary, read the one posted at IMDb.com and then decide if this movie might be for you. It likely isn't.
