Wow - how could Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz be so completely lackluster?!? Although the overall storyline is pretty compelling, I didn't feel any soul to this movie at all and ended up being pretty bored through the whole thing. It's just crazy to me that a movie with so much potential (including Charlize Theron's boobs!!) could be so drab. And long.a great canadian sleeper - peepys
This is a beautifully filmed, brilliantly acted and disturbing story of lovers in a dangerous time. It is remarkable in capturing the tension of European life between the great wars. The characters embody the social tension between the hedonistic breakdown of old mores and the new horrors of the rise of fascism that lead to the Spanish civil war and World War 2 and Hitler's rise to power. Can one please only oneself or are we all involved and connected?
Extraordinary in its ability to make the viewer play all the parts and come away disturbed and deeply conscious of our recent history and its current implications in our time. Don't miss this. Four starsQuietly tragic, Tragically quiet.... - Basil
There is no doubt in watching this film, you walk away thinking that love hurts and living with the pain of knowing what lay ahead in your lifetime can cause you to lead a life of dettachment and extreme decision. However, we all need to be loved and the character played by Charlize Theron is indeed conquering her demons of living a hard fast life and not wanting to experience anything that she would miss but yet, somehow loving and experiencing things she would miss.
The ending was very tragic, but quiet in it's tragedy. No gore basically. However, the tragedy could have been averted if the character wasn't so quiet.
Sad ending...definately being prepared for that is a good forewarning. Very nice film, well worth the watch.
