A Nice Little Film - AdoringPlanet
I thought this was a sweet little film, although the talky dialogue can be a bit hard to understand, especially if the audience is children. Some of the music seemed to drown out the dialogue in some parts, although I'm not sure if this was the fault of the sound engineer or if it was intentional. Overall, Kate Beckinsale plays a very convincing Alice and the costumes/sets were very believable and charming. If you're a fan of Alice in Wonderland, I would recommend this movie to you.Reverent approach to the text - Shawn_in_Montreal
... but without the means to reproduce the classic visuals of the Carroll book. This UK TV adaptation is well-acted by Beckinsale in the title role, Ian Holm as a wonderful White Knight, and others. The Clockwork-Orange/Raggedy Andy look for Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dum was a bit off-putting, though.
Of little interest to kids, I should think, who will likely find it too talky or scary and without the special effects they've come to expect.
Nothing I've seen here (and this is my third Alice movie from zip.ca) can match what I remember of the 1933 adaptation, which apparently is not on DVD.
Let's hope for the best for the Tim Burton version, due out in 2008
