A Very Long Engagement (Un Long dimanche de fiancailles)
Based on a novel by writer Sebastien Japriso, A Very Long Engagement depicts a young woman's (Audrey Tautou) extensive search for her missing beloved, a French soldier in World War I who appears to have been court-martialed under a cloak of secrecy, but who may now be stuck in enemy territory. No one is giving her any answers, but she's determined to find him, even if it means venturing into dangerous locales herself.

An excellent film. Although built around stereotypical cliches of French entertainment culture, this is still a dramatic and a well told story that flaunts and celebrates the harshness of life and war while obsessively contrasting this with by hopeful lovers in an American-like fairy tail of perfect love. I will admit, I put off watching this movie for more than 2 weeks after receiving it. My girlfriend had rented it, but when it came I dreaded the wasted evening I was sure to spend watching a chick flick. I will also admit that I couldn't have been more wrong about a movie! The first 20 mins of back story at the beginning of the movie had me captivated, and after that, there was more than enough mystery, intrigue, blood, action and humor to keep even the most macho of guys interested. The movie is centered on the love of two young people, but it is the search for clues and the unraveling of the mystery behind the bloody and tragic deaths/disappearances of five French WWI soldiers that occupies the majority of the plot and the viewer's attention. The scenery, humor and quaintness of the French village in which the main character lives adds to the movie making you want to live this movie rather than watch it. Overall this was a very satisfying movie viewing experience.
