The Phantom of the Opera
The Film. The classic musical comes to the big screen for the first time.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's stunning musical comes alive on-screen in this Joel Schumacher film. A talented recluse (Gerard Butler) disfigured in a tragic accident roams beneath the Paris Opera. Fueled with resentment, he terrorizes other musicians, until he falls for the lovely Christine (Emmy Rossum), a formidable singer whom he takes under his wing, molding her so she can become the sensational soprano he envisions her to be.

I didn't have high hopes for this movie, but I have to say it was awesome. I have seen this live a few times, and Andrew Lloyd Webber did a great job with this movie adaptation. The singing although not quite as good as on Broadway was very good. It was easy to follow and the picture quality was amazing. Highly recommed to this anyoneState-of-the-art Blu-ray Disc! - DVD_Bob
I thoroughly enjoyed this film from start to finish. Fabulous sets and costumes. It is a real spectacle from the opera house to the dungeons. And a great cast including 16 year old Emmy Rossum who plays Christine and has an amazing voice.
Blu-ray quality ... Reference Quality ... the best I have yet seen on my system. Picture Quality is outstanding ... jaw dropping ... almost 3D! Sound Quality is also outstanding ... great clarity and room shaking LFE. The combination is a must own disc for anyone owning a high end theatre system.
For those who have not seen the film ... it begins in grainy, black and white ... as are a several scenes ... which is such a contrast to the razor sharp, eye popping images in the majority of the film.
I highly recommend this film.Great Voices! Great Sets! Little bit of cheese... - Nanuk
I have to admit that this was my first experience with the Phantom. Although I have heard some of the music, I have never been able to see the musical live. Gerard Butler's role was the primary reason I gave in and rented this movie. I have to agree with cat in the hat's review for the most part. The singing was wonderful (love the teeny bits of scottish accent that slip into Gerard's voice from time to time), the character's were well cast and well played, the sets were marvellous! The changing of the Phantom from suave, masked figure of power and intrigue to the broken hearted, desperate tragic figure is really well done. However, there were more than a few scenes that left sort of a cheesy, "did they have to put that part in" taste in the mouth. I also felt that the timing of the film was off throughout most the movie. Although I was enjoying it, it wasn't hard to put it on pause and go make popcorn.
Overall though, it was well worth watching and fun to hear the lovely voices of Gerard and Emmy (much like hearing Nicole Kidman and Ewan Macgregor in Moulin Rouge) and realize what talented actors they are. I enjoyed the experience and have no problem recommending it to others.
