It's an allegory, get it? - rnhaas
If there wasn't such a strong allegorical tone to this (and the the subsequent series, which I must say, I have yet to see in its entirety) I doubt I would like it as much. There is a definite fan-boy-ness to this (especially the very first scene; can someone explain to me why artificial life forms would do such a thing?) that is hard to overlook until you distract yourself with the potential things the show is saying about the contemporary United States. It's a little too geeky for me taken straight up, but that being said, I think it may be the best American sci-fi show ever.TV at it's best. - Nickm
When Battlestar Galactica was on TV, I ignored it as just another re-hash of an old TV series. Was I wrong! First, the casting was excellent, and, more importantly, it kept the story line true to the original.
All the characters were real; they were not perfect, and they could actually get hurt. No photon torpedoes, the Silons were not stupid, and things did not always go thier way.
I think this is a series worth buying!
I would recommend getting a seanon, curl up and enjoy!Tremendous science fiction! More worthy as it evolves. - Dylanfly
Battlestar Gallactica (BG) brings out the best in science fiction: it tackles potent philosophy, offers imaginary realms, and delights in action.
The latter two themes are rather easy to achieve in science fiction: depict a strange universe, populate it with odd creatures, and dramatize some battles. This makes for your typical sci-fi, which can be good or just dreary.
Good science fiction, however, does what other genres cannot. Good sci-fi takes you into explorations of humanity by placing humans in remarkable situations. In the case of BG, the crucial theme has to do with consciousness: if robots have consciousness, are they human? And, if robots have consciousness, where will their loyalties fall? Where will their minds take them?
For young fans, there is enough military stuff to keep BG in the exciting action genre. But for others, the problem of consciousness (by the end of season 2.5) is really at the heart of the series. Although the acting is mixed (Bamber and Sackhoff are weak, while Olmos holds it all together), the production is well done. The episodes are sometimes banal (hostage taking), but often captivating. Meanwhile, the main themes of BG--consciousness, freedom, corruption--are ever growing. The result is the best science fiction on television since Star Trek's Next Generation. Let us only hope for many more seasons to come.
