In Good Company
An ad salesman, Dan (Dennis Quaid), must take a junior position after a corporate shakedown. Worse, he now reports to a much-younger boss, Tom (Topher Grace), a business school grad who espouses a sales approach branded Synergy that's at odds with Dan's old-school style. Although they don't see eye to eye, the two must get along, a mandate made more difficult when the still-married Tom becomes smitten with Dan's daughter (Scarlett Johansson).

This is a light comedy, but it still carries a message. And, when you think about it, it rings very true in any period. Anybody who has been in that kind of workplace knows that it's more about butt kissing than actual knowledge. In this sense, the ending was not really believable, but I still enjoyed the movie quite a bit.Good movie, not as funny as expected - thenewguy
In Good Company is about a family man, Dan, whose company has just been bought. He had a daughter in college, his wife is pregnant and he has a new boss who needs to downsize the department. The new boss, Carter, is half Dan's age and is falling for Dan's oldest daughter.
The film is a lot more heart felt and down to earth than I had expected. It has some really touching moments and spends some time exploring the results of a business take-over. There's less comedy than I'd thought going in, but the comedy presented is well thought out and well executed. The actors do a great job and the characters are well rounded.
I think this film will appeal to people closer to "Dan"'s age than "Carter"'s age. The humour and life choices focus more around the middle-aged group of characters than the younger ones.
It's a solid movie. Nothing that really makes me stand up and go "wow", but good over-all.Quaid and Grace make good Company - Baboonvideo
ZIP-WORTHY IF: You can appreciate a fresh and heartfelt take on complex relationships.
REVIEW: One may have not anticipated it considering his initial commercial success (1999's American Pie) - but, given the quality of About a Boy (2002) and In Good Company, it is clear that writer-director Paul Weitz is shaping into a very observant, honest and fulfilling voice when it comes to the relationships between men and boys.
In Good Company focuses on Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid), the 51-year-old head of advertising sales for a sports magazine. When a large conglomerate purchases the magazine, Dan is demoted and replaced with Carter Duryea, a 26-year-old newbie (Topher Grace). Weitz could have gone for easy laughs given the situation, particularly when Carter begins dating Dan's daughter (Scarlett Johansson), but he wisely mines the relationship for all of its complexities and humour, with both men learning a lot about themselves along the way.
Quaid continues his Rookie-led career resurgence, strengthening as an actor with growing years, and Grace's light comic touch proves that he made the right move in leaving TV's That '70s Show and is a real talent to watch.
In Good Company is ultimately not as heartwarming or memorable as About a Boy, faltering a bit in the final stretch, but it is nonetheless a clever, insightful and entertaining comedy.
