This was Howard Hughes' favourite film?!?! - RobBC
When a Russian spy satellite crash lands in the North Pole it’s up to Captain Rock Hudson and his submarine full of seamen to get to it before the evil Commies. Pretty standard Cold War fare with the required number of secret agents and evil Russians squaring off against their upstanding American counterparts. Hudson and McGoohan put in passable performances but Ernest Borgnine’s ham-fisted turn as a Communist defector belongs in the Hollywood Hall of Shame. Engaging enough despite the rather dated special effects and a disappointingly dull ending that practically drips with forced ironies.Loved it! - Calzephyr
It seems every submarine movie out there is slow paced and suspenseful, and we loved every minute of it. The plot was so intricate, we were on pins and needles towards the end because we didn't know what the outcome would be. Splendid performances all around, especially Rock Hudson. The effects weren't too bad after all these years either, although we kept wondering why everyone was exposing their flesh when they hit Ice Station Zebra. Brrr!I agree, a Great movie! - fairweather
Boris' review made me rent this and I thought it was a good movie, too - just as he said. If you look at the British gentleman in it as the main character - a sort of James Bond - it is superb. The acting is good, the plot and the tension created by and between the actors is all very good - and it contains enough suspense and action in it to make it truly an interesting and worthwhile movie even by today's standards. Certainly worth a watch with popcorn on a rainy or snowy day with nothing to do. I'm glad I rented it - thanks to Boris and his review. Do see his review before deciding if you will rent it, too.
