Jack The Bear
As the monster-host of a late night horror show, John (Danny DeVito) delights the neighborhood kids with his silly ghoulish antics - but his embarrassed 12-year-old son, Jack the Bear, is not amused. The other dysfunctional lunatics on the block - and his monster crush on the cute girl at school (Reese Witherspoon) - don't make things any easier for Jack. But when a family crisis hits, will Jack's dad be able to lift the grownup burden from his young son's shoulders? Oscar nominee Gary Sinise and Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus co-star in this funny, bittersweet look at the joys and pains of growing up.

The detail injected into this film was great. I loved DeVito...some amazing acting here! I did not expect to cry...I rarely do but DeVito was wonderful.
The story is well written and executed. The feel of the movie, the atmosphere was so charming.
DeVito should be really proud of this film!Hard to describe. - cathyottawa
I agree with the descriptor, this did have a real Wonder Years feel for me (it's set in the 1970s), and I know exactly what they mean by To Kill A Mockingbird, as Sinise's character initially gives off a real Boo Radley vibe.
But this is a strange little film. At it's heart, it's about family ups and downs, and overcoming personal demons, mixed with a bit of a coming of age story.
The movie centers around Jack, the oldest son of DeVito's character, and he narrates the film. We see him get interrested in girls (Reese Witherspoon, who looks too old for the part), and deal with his mother's death, and take care of his super cute little brother, and struggle with his love/hate relationship with his dad.
DeVito does some nice work here, showing hidden depths. It's not the kind of part you'd expect him to play.
Had it not been for the silly way they resolved the story line with Gary Sinse's character, which was unnecessary to say the least, I might have given this four stars. Aside from that it's kind of a sweet, endearing film.
