Sugar
Everyone Has A Fix
Based on several short stories by acclaimed writer and filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, SUGAR, is a provocative, challenging and bizarrely funny coming of age love story. Cliff (André Noble), a homosexual teen on the verge of turning 18, is restless in his sheltered suburban life, and anxious to have his first sexual experience. Armed with a bottle of vodka and a joint, Cliff goes downtown looking for some action, and meets up with Butch (Brendan Fehr), a hunky street hustler. In the company of Butch, Cliff's eyes are opened to a world of gay sex, drugs, prostitution, and life on the street, but Cliff soon learns that to taste the sugar of life is to experience the bittersweet.

The film follows a young man's first experiences with sex as he befriends a street hustler. The budget was clearly miniscule for this small film, but it works; mostly because Brendan Fehr ('Roswell') is brilliant as Butch, the hustler who, like many, never finds the elusive redemption he craves. There are great small characters, like Cookie (Haylee Wanstall) the ritalin-addled pre-teen.I hope this is NOT realism! - BrightAngel
There really wasn't any humour in this film. When they seemed to be laughing and having fun, it was just silly fun. For the most part, it was disturbing and sad and it was extremely graphic but not sensationalistic. All graphic scenes were appropriate for the context and mood of the film (a dark, distressing mood) but if you like to watch confused, sad people in pain then you will like this film. I could not watch it a second time.Sweet, but underdeveloped - FilmJunkie

There are great small characters, like Cookie (Haylee Wanstall) the ritalin-addled pre-teen who seems to more about life than anyone and Canadian film mainstay Maury Chaykin as Stanley who has a slightly odd fetish. This film is a rough but sweet look at the dark side of life, but it hopefully brings light as well. I only wish films like this were given the funding of crap-fests the big studios pump out.
