Somewhere in Arabia, a long time ago, a man is punished by an angry wizard for involving his daughter in an amateur knife-throwing act. His punishment is to be confined to a lamp for all eternity. At Christmas time in England 2000 years later, Bernard Bottle, an art dealer seemingly on top of the world after discovering an extremely valuable painting, gets sacked by his nasty and greedy boss (Rowan Atkinson) and then discovers his girlfriend has gone off with his so called best mate taking almost everything from his flat with her except an old lamp. What emerges from the lamp is a confused genie (Lenny Henry) who comes to embrace everything about the modern world with child-like enthusiasm, especially fast food. Bernie (Alan Cumming) and the Genie, Josephus, become friends, try their best to cheer up each other and discover what they really need in life, especially at Christmas. Written by Richard Curtis, Bernard and the Genie will make you laugh till your sides ache but be prepared to shed at tear at the touching ending. Not your average Genie - Mavatar
Lenny Henry's Genie shows us a whole new world that we thought we knew. The joy of this film is the Genie's simple joy and excitement over things we take for granted - new ways of washing your hair, washing at all, the little delights of modern life. This is one of my favourite Christmas treasures - other people have White Christmas - but I prefer the twist. Rowan Atkinson is over-the-top smarmy best Alan Cumming is almost too innocent but, after all, it's a Christmas movie - the morals are simple and clear and little realism intrudes to take the gleam off the snow.
