Rory O'Shea Was Here
Live life like you mean it.
Although he's handicapped by muscular dystrophy, Rory O'Shea (James McAvoy) refuses to surrender to the desperation of his life and instead embraces the potential in every day. When he moves into the Carrigmore Home for the Disabled and befriends the deeply bored Michael (Steven Robertson), a man suffering from cerebral palsy, Rory infuses his pal's life with renewed hope even as he struggles with his own demons.

I have not yet seen a story quite like this one. Rory stands out as a man who is neither pitiable nor fully likeable. He is a person who happens to be in a wheelchair and it is that one fact that creates the image that others have of him. His limits are physical, but the real challenges he faced are attitudes. His father's character is equally strong, a man who is almost overwhelmed by his grief for his son's disease. Contrast that to our other lead character's father who abandoned his son despite the son's high intelligence, something the father seems to value. One of the most upbeat & gutsy films I've seen this year - scallywag
As it goes, I do have a close family member that is challenged by cerebral palsy, thus my interest in this film. Of course, no matter how far fetched or downright depressing I find most films in this genre. "The other side of the Mountain" springs to mind just now.
Conversely; 'Rory O'Shea was here" is not in the least tragic, weepy or depressing. That spiky headed Irishman is out to ask the world; "Who's Handicapped?" If you can live with the Irish Pub language and look past the wheel chairs, you will gain a pretty fair insight of the courage, intelligence and just plain heart that those we call "Handicapped" posses.
I loved this movie, I think you will too.

My Mom was right; I did like this movie. It's totally fun, inspirational and touching. The actors are quite believable and pull you in to their struggles. It had just the right amount of quirk for me.
