Swimming Upstream
Swimming Upstream tells the true story of 1950s Australian swimming sensation Tony Fingleton (Jesse Spencer), who, as a youngster, vied with his favored older brothers for his alcoholic father's (Geoffrey Rush) affection. Overshadowed at every turn by his brothers, it's only in the pool that Tony felt he could compete -- and maybe even win Olympic gold. Judy Davis plays Tony's long-suffering but quietly heroic mother.

This well acted movie, shows how an alcoholic father can control a family. He is either all in or all out when it comes to involvement. If you are winning his way, he is in. If you are not first, he considers you a loser. Nice to see you can see have great kids become great people in these situations!its okay - klmh
jesse spencer, the blond doctor from lost, plays an aspiring olympic swimmer with an alcoholic father and a brother who exceeds him in the sport. He takes care of his mother, played by judy davis, who gets pushed around by her large family. The family is dealing with Rush's unemployment and it goes into the whole labour movement in australia. there are a lot of lengthy swimming scenes and while the acting is good I wouldn't get too carried away. Jesse Spencer is pretty cute though so if you're a fan of his then you should check this out. Its mostly pretty depressing though... I've got to say.Mesmerizing performances - Gayl
I was caught up in the movie almost from the beginning by the strong performances of the actors and their credible talents.
There was little in the performances by Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis that I didn't or couldn't believe as the strengths and frailities of their characters kept peeking through their day-to-day existence and endowing them with a richness of character that was just altogether absolutely believable and human.
A wonderful story showing that our dreams and determination can take us much further than our talent.
