the plot was predictable from the begining. I tried to enjoy the cliches, like the car on a dark, empty road hitting the werewolf but after a while it just got to be too much. I think Craven had a hard time deciding whether to make fun of the genre, like he did with Scream, or make a serious and scary film. He picked the middle road and got lost along the way.3 Stars - bleuorchid21
A basic story about a brother and sister living in LA, who after getting involved in a car accident, are attacked and bitten by a werewolf. They slowly start to develop the senses and attributes of a werewolf, such as attuned hearing and sense of smell, super strength, as well as heightened sexual awareness. Their job is to try and figure out who the human form of said werewolf is so they can destroy him/her and get back to their normal lives.
Wes Craven directed this 2005 werewolf horror flick, which includes a cast of Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg, Milo Ventimiglia, Porti de Rossi, Mya, Shannon Elizabeth, Joshua Jackson, and Judy Greer. The movie doesn't have a lot to make it unrated (a shot of a male's backside and some extra gore), but works as it doesn't take itself seriously. One of the bonus features, Making of a Werewolf with Jesse Eisenberg, is funny, as it is a mockumentary about how the makeup artists transformed him into a werewolf and the processing behind it, with a cameo with director Wes Craven. An solid monster movie. - ScarlettLynn
There's a difference between a regular horror movie & a monster movie. A regular horror movie is scary, moody, makes you think twice about leaving your closet door open. The subgenre of the monster movie can still scare you but it's more about a sense of fun. You've got to slay the monster & have a kick-ass time doing it.
I think "Cursed" has fully embraced the monster movie genre. It's filled with references to past creature-features at every turn. It knows it's origins & embraces them. It's opening shots remind me of one of the coolest horror movies ever made, "The Lost Boys". Not anywhere near as great & iconic as that film, this one still has a great sense of fun that's totally effective.
It's a blast to watch with a fun cast who knows the perfect tone for every scene. Christina Ricci has a face made for the supernatural. She has an eerie, ethereal quality that totally works. Joshua Jackson, Judy Greer, Jesse Eisenberg & the rest of the supporting cast are totally solid.
The cameo factor in this film is very strange. Craig Kilbourne, Scott Baio? Who picked those random names out of a hat. It definately lets you know to have some fun & not take yourself too seriously while watching. I've got some critiques about the ending. It was a bit weak and predicable. But a good ending can be hard to come by & I didn't think it was necessarily a "bad" ending.
The DVD has a typical behind the scenes featurette which lauds the genius of director Wes Craven. There's a typical behind the special effects featurette which lauds the genius of the effects guys. There's an editing featurette which... well you could probably figure that out.
Jesse Eisenberg had a mini-documentary behind the scenes of Becoming A Werewolf. It's definately a spoof of a DVD featurette but I don't think I found it really funny. A selected scene commentary by an effects guy & stunt man from the werewolf costume was the best extra. It started dry but it got better.
