Porco Rosso fell short of great my expectations. Its hard to live up to high standards when your track record includes: Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke and the award winning Spirited Away.
Every talented Director/ artist has their falls... Porco Rosso was Hayao Miyazaki questionable and least favorite films. Only Miyazaki could create a pilot who happened to be a porcine and with political intentions to say the least. At first glance Porco Rosso could easily be mistaken for kid friendly, yet its directedly to adults. With a message of hope, and anti-facisim.Another Miyazaki Gem - Mookie
I have almost seen every Miyazaki film from studio Ghibli and I have yet to be truly disappointed with one of his films. This one isn't his best but it is still far above your average animated fare.
The animation is top notch. The characters are well developed. The story could have been improved but it was still fun.
The best scene for me was the "kidnapping" of the school girls at the beginning and the way they girls take such glee in the danger they are in. No one captures the joy of being a child like Miyazaki.
The biggest flaws of this film are the story's resolution (a bit anticlimactic) and the mystery as to why this man is a pig is left unresolved. My Favourite Flying Pig - Film_Snob
"Porco Rosso" is a world weary flying pig (okay, he's a porcine pilot).
While adults will appreciate his cynicism, it is a bit much for younger kids. Still, "porco Rosso" is a good film to watch with slightly older kids. They'll like the action and some of the humour, and adults won't have any trouble staying awake.
